As Sent in by a Reader: What I am Reading Now: Investing & Moral Stance

As sent in by a Reader:- What I am reading now: Investing Helps take a moral position.

I found this article interesting. I don't regret having received it in my mail. At first, I thought it was one of those cringing messages. Since it's about investing, I decided to read on. It's a gold nugget.

"Investing in the stock market does not mean forgetting about ethical principles, as the example of some mutual funds demonstrates. A profile by the Detroit News on May 10 of Ave Maria Mutual Funds described the success of this approach.

Founded four years ago, Ave Maria has grown to a company that manages four funds, including one launched this earlier this month. Overall, the funds have assets totaling around $300 million. In the period since Ave Maria started investing, all its funds have obtained higher returns than the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.

The Ave Maria Web site explains that its funds "are designed specifically for morally responsible investors who are looking for financially sound investments in companies that do not violate the core teachings of the Catholic Church."

Furthermore, it explains that the funds "take a pro-family approach to investing." This involves examining companies on issues such as abortion, pornography, and policies that undermine the sacrament of marriage. The Detroit News noted that the funds dropped their investment in PepsiCo last year after the soft-drink maker started providing health-care coverage to unmarried couples, including gay and lesbian partnerships.

In Canada, meanwhile, investments made according to "socially responsible guidelines" are also increasingly popular. Assets invested using social or environmental criteria rose by 27% to $65.46 billion Canadian ($51.8 billion US) in 2004 from 2002, according to a report by the Social Investment Organization. The report was cited by the Globe and Mail newspaper May 6.

    A wide variety

Ethical investing, or socially responsible investment (SRI) as it is termed by many, can use a variety of criteria. There are specifically Catholic funds, such as Ave Maria, or funds that exclude companies involved in activities such as tobacco, alcohol and armaments.

The New York Times on May 1 noted that there are Muslim funds that exclude financial services companies because they lend with interest. There are also single-issue funds, such as the Sierra Club and Portfolio 21, which concentrate on the environment. Other funds use what the article termed a "best-in-class approach." Instead of eliminating an entire industry sector, the fund invests in the most acceptable companies in the sector.

Some of the funds have come in for criticism, the Times noted, because they are insufficiently strict in their criteria. The newspaper cited a report by Paul Hawken, of the Natural Capital Institute in San Francisco, which was critical of many funds for being too indiscriminating in their investments.

Last Nov. 15 the Christian Science Monitor also reported on Hawken's criticisms of "ethical funds." A study published in October by the Natural Capital Institute showed that the funds own shares in 90% of the firms on the Fortune 500 list.

But both the Monitor and the Times noted that the issue of deciding how to invest is complicated. As well, a lot depends on how each fund applies the ethical principles they follow.

"We would like to have neat little boxes that all the funds could fit into," said Anita Green, vice president for social research at Pax World Funds. "So far we haven't found a method that will do it," she told the New York Times.

The Times article also cited Amy Domini, founder of the Domini Social Equity Fund. This fund, along with others managed by Domini Social Investments, currently manages over $1.8 billion, according to the Domini Web site. Domini, noted the Times article, invests in companies such as McDonald's. Replying to those who criticize investing in the fast-food industry, Amy Domini told the newspaper that McDonald's had made some changes, such as using napkins made of recycled paper and avoiding antibiotics in beef.

The Monitor article cited Garvin Jabusch, director of the Sierra Club fund family. The funds, he explained avoids risky investments "that are long on ideals and short on track records." Instead of excluding every company that may not be 100% acceptable, they prefer to concentrate on major corporations that make consistent improvements in their business practices.

The article noted, however, that more than 600 funds worldwide claim the SRI label, and investors cannot always be sure what it means, since the definitions used by the funds vary widely.

And sometimes the funds do decide to sell stocks, even those that are giving good returns, when they see that the companies are no longer acceptable. An article April 14 in the British newspaper The Guardian described how Pax World Funds decided to sell its stocks in Starbucks, following the firm's decision to introduce a coffee-based liqueur. Pax World Funds, described by the Guardian as one of the first SRI funds in the United States, excludes companies involved in alcohol, gambling, tobacco products, arms production, pornography and nuclear power.

    Pressuring companies

The article also raised the point as to whether such funds can really have much influence on company policy. In the case of Starbucks, the decision by Pax World Funds to sell $23.4 million worth of stocks is not likely to have much impact on a company with a current market value in excess of $20 billion.

Yet, excluding investments according to ethical criteria is only part of the picture. Another way to have an impact is by exercising voting rights as shareholders. The Guardian noted that ethical investors in the United States have already filed 200 resolutions on social and environmental issues in the run-up to the spring 2005 annual-meetings.

Reuters described this activity in a May 2 article. The article reported on some of the activities of the New York-based Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR). The organization filed 264 shareholder resolutions this year, an almost fourfold increase from 20 years ago.

The ICCR Web site describes the organization as "an association of 275 faith-based institutional investors." The members pressure companies "to be socially and environmentally responsible." The combined portfolio value of ICCR's member organizations, reported the Web site, is estimated to be $110 billion.

The ICCR annual report for 2003-2004 notes a wide variety of issues that the organization is grappling with, from corporate governance to global warming, financial speculation, human rights and violence in video games.

    Moral principles

Such a range of issues will understandably give rise to a gamut of opinions. Nevertheless, the underlying point -- that investors should pay attention to ethical principles when deciding where their money should go -- is growing in importance.

As the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church explains, Catholic social teaching values the role of business and the market economy (Nos. 334-5). The Compendium also defends the role of financial markets, observing that the large investments needed in a modern economy would not be possible without capital markets that can direct savings to help economic development (No. 368).

But the Compendium also notes that businesses are occupying a wider role and taking on greater responsibilities in today's economy. "Due to the increasing complexity of business activities, decisions made by companies produce a number of very significant interrelated effects, both in the economic and social spheres" (No. 344).

This brings with it, the text continues, a responsibility on the part of businessmen for an increased reflection on the moral issues involved in their activity. The general public also have a role to play, the Compendium adds, by deciding where to place their financial resources. This means making a value judgment regarding possible investments (No. 358).

The decision of where to place funds is always a moral and cultural choice, says the Compendium, citing John Paul II's encyclical "Centesimus Annus." A point that is meeting increasing acceptance among investors. "

The Practice of Pornography as Seen by Archibishop John Foley

Archibishop John Foley calls the practice of P.... degrading: Youth most at Risk.

The young, who are the most frequent users of television and the Internet, are also the most vulnerable to the threat of pornography, says a Vatican official.

The Italian think tank Eurispes presented the 4th Report on Pornography in Italy, a project sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, at a press conference in Rome on Thursday.

Archbishop John Foley, president of the pontifical council, acknowledged the positive aspects of the growing world of social communications, but also recognized that it is often used as a vehicle to "create new models of behavior, which are not always edifying for human dignity."

"It is to be hoped that this latest study of Eurispes will contribute to form responsible citizens not only to live in a legal communicative structure that protects the young, but also to exercise the self-control and mature judgment that could deprive the pornographers of their market," said the archbishop.

Archbishop Foley added that Eurispes has made "a notable contribution to shed light on the alarming spread of such a degrading practice as pornography, lamentably regarded as profitable."

"In this context, the most vulnerable are children and young people, who spend many hours in front of the television, and surf the Internet," warned the archbishop.

Therefore, it is necessary "that a true pedagogy exist in this regard on the part of the family, the school and society, appealing to the personal responsibility of professionals working in the filed of communication, establishing specific ethical codes, inspired in the respect of human dignity, the common good and oriented to the development of the human person."

Because "pornography perverts human relations; it is based on the exploitation of persons, creates anti-social attitudes, obliterates the moral sense and cannot lead to mature relationships because it is based on egoism and creates a genuine dependency," warned Archbishop Foley.

We are all called to react "in face of such a threat to the healthy formation of the human person," continued the archbishop.

However, "our attitude must not only be one of censure and condemnation," he said.

Rather, the prelate continued, we must "respond to the problem by establishing a continuous dialogue with the world of communication, with the cinematographic industries that determine the dissemination of attitudes and fashions, with state authorities, and above all with the public, so that it will be able to discern and choose."

The report revealed that two-thirds of Italian boys ages 15 to 18 access printed or online pornographic material, and it warned that a growing number of minors are being exploited on pornographic Internet sites.

Regarding sales, pay-per-view television, home videos and online pornography constitute the greatest part of sales in the industry, with cellular video-telephones making up an increasing share.

Given the spread of pornography, the Pontifical Council for Social Communications published in 1989 a document entitled "Pornography and Violence in Social Communications: A Pastoral Response."

Eurispes, the Institute of Political, Economic and Social Studies is a non-profit institution working since 1982 in the field of formation and political, economic and social research.

Kinsey's Sexual Revolution in Focus: Taking a deeper Look

Dishing on Kinsey: Kinsey's sexual deviance was hidden thus far, but now revealed by author

Dr. Susan Brinkmann, correspondent for the Catholic Standards & Times and author of "The Kinsey Corruption: An Expose on the most influential 'scientist' of Our Time." uncovered some dirt on the fallacy of the Sexual Revolution, Sex Ed in American schools and link to P. In this interview given to zenit, the doctor made some revealing and sensationalistic remarks.

Q: Why is Kinsey a controversial character for some and a heroic figure for others?

Brinkmann: The only difference between those who consider Kinsey controversial and those who consider him heroic is nothing more than a matter of education.

Anyone who reads the work of Dr. Judith Reisman, whose research is the basis for my book, "The Kinsey Corruption," will see not only factual, written evidence of Kinsey's questionable background, they'll see photographs and letters he wrote to friends about his collection of homosexual pornography. None of the information about Kinsey's sordid background is "alleged"; it's out there in black and white. If you're not reading it, you don't want to.

There are films depicting Kinsey and his staff engaging in all kinds of sex acts in the attic of the Kinsey home that still exist -- films that were made by professional cinematographers who have never denied their existence.

There is also a documentary called "Kinsey's Pedophiles" that details Kinsey's involvement with pedophiles and other sexual miscreants from whom he gathered the data that supposedly supports his hypothesis that children are sexual from birth.

The film was shown in England and even the far-left BBC Radio Times called it "deeply unsettling."

How can such a notorious man continue to command hero status? Because of the lucrative financial awards available to those who promote the sexual revolution he started.

Kinsey's two books -- "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male," published in 1948, and "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female," which followed in 1952 -- started what we now call the sexual revolution. This revolution is a lot more than just a change in attitude. It's a business -- a multibillion-dollar business.

This contraceptive mentality was born in the kind of sexual license that Kinsey endorsed. He believed pornography was harmless, that adultery can enhance a marriage and that children are sexual from birth.

Keeping these and other Kinsey "myths" alive is why the porn industry is thriving and why abortion and contraception providers rake in millions of dollars every year.

And let's not forget the nation's sexual education industry, the spawn of Kinsey's so-called New Biology. With the exception of programs that are strictly abstinence-only, all other sex-ed programs used in the United States are based on Kinsey's flawed research.

Most people are completely unaware of this, or of the connection between American sex-ed and the porn, abortion and contraception industries.

For instance, Planned Parenthood's former medical director, Dr. Mary Calderone, was also a director of the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States, the sex-ed provider launched by the Kinsey Institute in 1964 with seed money provided by Playboy. And we wonder why our sex-ed classes are so graphic.

Q: Why did Kinsey keep part of his life hidden from the public?

Brinkmann: Kinsey had sexual appetites that were completely unacceptable to Americans in the 1940s.

He was a pederast who enjoyed public nudity, made explicit sex films and eventually developed such an extreme sadomasochistic form of autoeroticism that some believe it caused his untimely death in 1956.

This is not the sort of thing he wanted the public to know about. He maintained a meticulously engineered facade of a typical Midwestern family man at all costs because it was so critical to his success -- and to his financial backing from the Rockefeller Foundation.

Q: Did Kinsey's religious background influence his research in any way?

Brinkmann: Absolutely. Kinsey was born into a strict Methodist home in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1894. Dancing, tobacco, alcohol and dating were all forbidden. He eventually severed all ties with his parents -- and their religion -- and lived the rest of his life as an avid atheist.

After completing his undergraduate work in zoology at Bowdoin College in 1916, he went on to continue his studies at Harvard's Bussy Institution. His atheistic beliefs flourished at Harvard where Darwinism and the New Biology, which denied the existence of God, were enjoying immense popularity on campus.

By the time Kinsey arrived in Indiana, he was an avowed atheist who embraced the science of eugenics, which called for the elimination of "lower level" Americans. For the rest of his life, he would permit no blacks, Jews or committed Christians on his staff.

His books make no attempt to hide his "grand scheme," which was to steer society away from its traditional moral standards and toward "free love."

Q: Were there any aspects of Kinsey's methods and research that were questionable?

Brinkmann: Almost all of his methods were questionable. However, the fundamental flaw in Kinsey's research was that it was based on a sexually explicit and highly offensive questionnaire comprised of 350 questions that few "typical" Americans were willing to answer.

This meant he had to rely on "volunteers" to answer his questionnaire, which included a variety of deviants such as incarcerated criminals, prostitutes, streetwalkers and other riffraff.

Serious social scientists know that they can't rely on volunteers for sexual studies because it attracts a disproportionate number of "unconventional" men and women. Relying on these volunteers would produce results that showed a falsely high percentage of non-virginity, masturbation, promiscuity and homosexuality in the population.

However, this is precisely what Kinsey did. Kinsey classified 1,400 criminals and sex offenders as "normal" on the grounds that such miscreants were essentially the same as other men -- except that these had gotten caught. The "human males" category could then include incarcerated pedophiles, pederasts, homosexual males, boy prostitutes and miscellaneous sexual predators.

His studies concerning child sexuality are the most outrageous -- and some say criminal -- of all. Kinsey relied on pedophiles who sent him data from their crimes. He used this data to claim that children as young as 4 months are capable of sexual arousal.

Kinsey staff member and co-author Paul Gebhard admitted that they were relying on information being sent to them by a man named Rex King, a serial rapist who was guilty of raping more than 800 children.

Perhaps the most widely publicized connection between Kinsey and a known pedophile took place in Germany a year after Kinsey's death. Notorious Nazi pedophile Dr. Fritz Von Balluseck was on trial for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl when correspondence from Kinsey was found in his possession.

Kinsey was encouraging the doctor to continue sending him "data" from his crimes and even urged him to "be careful" in one letter.

The details of this aspect of Kinsey's work were made into a documentary film in 1998 and entitled "Secret History: Kinsey's Pedophiles." It aired in England but was never shown in the United States.

Q: Did credentialed experts criticize Kinsey's works?

Brinkmann: Several experts criticized Kinsey's work, such as W. Allen Wallis, the University of Chicago statistician and past president of the American Statistical Association who was one of the nation's most distinguished statisticians. Wallis found serious flaws in Kinsey's work, not the least of which was the fact that one-third of the men interviewed were sex offenders.

Even the esteemed British medical journal, The Lancet, concluded that Kinsey "questioned an unrepresentative proportion of prison inmates and sex offenders in a survey of normal sexual behavior."

Dr. Albert Hobbs, a sociologist and author at the University of Pennsylvania, accused Kinsey of violating all three precepts necessary for sound scientific method and procedure.

First, the scientist should not have any preconceived hypothesis in order to present only the facts. Hobbs noted that "Kinsey actually had a two-pronged hypothesis. He vigorously promoted, juggling his figures to do so, a hedonistic, animalistic conception of sexual behavior, while at the same time he consistently denounced all biblical and conventional conceptions of sexual behavior."

Second, Kinsey refused to publish the basic data upon which his conclusions rested. Third, he refused to reveal the questionnaire upon which he based all of his facts.

Q: What effect did Kinsey's works have on American law?

Brinkmann: This is particularly disturbing. Between the years of 1948 and 1952, two critical events were taking place in the United States -- the introduction of Kinsey's erroneous research into American society and the development of the Model Penal Code.

One of the principal authors of the new MPC was Morris Ploscowe, a staunch supporter of Kinsey's research. Ploscowe argued that based on Kinsey's findings, "when a total cleanup of sex offenders is demanded, it is in effect a proposal to put 95% of the male population in jail ..."

Therefore, Ploscowe wrote, "If these conclusions are correct, then it is obvious that our sex crime legislation is completely out of touch with the realities of individual living …."

Unfortunately, he never investigated the "if," and instead plowed ahead with the MPC revision that resulted in the downward revision of penalties for 52 major sex crimes.

Another big Kinsey supporter who argued for softening the nation's sex crime penalties was attorney Morris L. Ernst, a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union.

In addition to serving as Kinsey's attorney, he also represented Margaret Sanger -- the founder of Planned Parenthood -- the Kinsey Institute, the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States and Planned Parenthood of America.

According to Dr. Reisman's research, Ernst "advocated the legalization of adultery, obscenity and abortion throughout his career, as well as Kinsey's full panoply of sex law changes." According to Ernst, Kinsey's data first entered into the stream of law through the MPC tentative draft number four, dealing with sex offenses, on April 25, 1955.

The good news is that in April of 2004, after five years of study, the American Legislative Exchange Council, a group of 2,400 lawmakers from 50 states, concluded that the work of Kinsey was a fraud and contained "manufactured statistics."

The report outlined the influence these bogus numbers had on the weakening of 52 sex laws that once protected women, children and marriage. Methods for undoing the damage to America's social and legal systems are presently being studied.

Dialogue and Peace: Pope Benedict Invites Catholic Faithful and Others

Pope Benedict says dialogue is key for peace

Dialogue between cultures is indispensable for peace, said Benedict XVI when receiving the new ambassador of Macedonia.

This is the important lesson left by the conflict that bloodied the Balkans in the 1990s, the Pope said in his English-language address today to Bartolomej Kajtazi.

In his address, the Holy Father thanked the country for having "reaffirmed its commitment to forge a path of peace and reconciliation."

"By doing so it can become an example to others in the Balkan region," he said. "Tragically, cultural differences have often been a source of misunderstanding between peoples and even the cause of senseless conflicts and wars."

Benedict XVI said that, on the contrary, "dialogue between cultures is an indispensable building stone of the universal civilization of love for which every man and woman longs."

"I encourage you and your citizens therefore to affirm the fundamental values common to all cultures; common because they find their source in the very nature of the human person," he stated.

"In this way the quest for peace is consolidated allowing you to dedicate every human and spiritual resource to the material and moral progress of your people, in a spirit of fruitful cooperation with neighboring countries," encouraged the Holy Father.

    Slavic evangelizers

Benedict XVI mentioned the example of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, evangelizers of the Slavic peoples. Every year, on the occasion of their feast, a delegation from Macedonia visits Rome.

"Just as Cyril and Methodius recognized the acute need to transpose correctly biblical notions and Greek theological concepts into a very different context of thought and historical experience, so today the primary task facing Christians in Europe is that of casting the ennobling light of Revelation on all that is good, true and beautiful," he added.

"In this way all peoples and nations are drawn towards that peace and freedom which God the Creator intends for everyone," asserted the Pontiff.

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has 2 million inhabitants, 79% of whom are Orthodox and 29% Muslim. The nation has 15,000 Catholics.

The republic obtained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, when Slobodan Milosevic was president of Serbia.

American Cardinal, Archibishop of San Francisco May Be Next Pope

Is there any chance that an American Cardinal may become pope? What does the nomination of the Archibiship of San Francisco tell us?

Find out who Archibishop William Levada is? Read this article published by zenit.org

Benedict XVI named the archbishop of San Francisco to succeed him as the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The Vatican announced today that Archbishop William Levada, 68, will fill the vacancy left by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger upon his election to the papacy.

The Pope and Archbishop Levada worked together from 1986 to 1993 on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The archbishop was the only American bishop on the editorial committee. He also authored the Catechism's glossary, which was published in the second English-language edition of the Catechism.

Archbishop Levada has been a bishop-member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith since 2002, and worked under Cardinal Ratzinger as an official of the congregation when the cardinal became prefect in 1981.

Born William Levada in Long Beach, California, June 15, 1936, he attended entered the seminary in Los Angeles.

In 1958, he was sent to further his seminary formation in Rome at the North American College, and received a doctorate in sacred theology "magna cum laude" from the Gregorian University in Rome.

He was ordained a priest in St. Peter's Basilica Dec. 20, 1961, and worked five years in parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

After receiving his doctorate, he taught theology at St. John's Seminary School of Theology, located at Camarillo, in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Father Levada was appointed as an official of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1976, and during his six years of service, he taught at the Gregorian University.

In 1982, he was assigned to be executive director of California's bishops' conference in Sacramento, the public policy arm of the Church in California. During his two years there, he was named auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, and was ordained May 12, 1983.

Returning to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1984, he served as vicar for Santa Barbara until 1986, when he was appointed archbishop of Portland, Oregon.

Archbishop Levada returned to California in 1995 as coadjutor archbishop of San Francisco, and since then has been active on many committees of the U.S. bishops' conference, the Catholic University of America, the national shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the National Catholic Bioethics Center.

He participated in the special assembly of the Synod of Bishops for America in 1997, and was subsequently named to its post-synodal council.

He was designated bishop co-chair of the Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue in the United States in for the year 2000.

In November, 2000 the Vatican announced his appointment as a member of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, and two years later, in 2003, he began a 3-year term as chairman of the U.S. bishops' conference Committee on Doctrine.

Founded in 1542 by Pope Paul II, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was originally called the Sacred Congregation of the Universal Inquisition, as its duty was to defend the Church from heresy. It is the oldest of the curia's nine congregations.

Late Pope John Paul II: A Model Pope Who will be Always Remembered

John Paul in Life and in Death: A remarkable human being, a peace-loving pope and effective leader of the Catholic Church.
    PromQuincenera

Pope Benedict XVI's Assets and Liabilities to the Roman Catholic Church:

Until a few days ago, Cardinal Ratzingerwas the guardian of theology when he led the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He had a specific role to play. He played it well. For 24 years, he was the chief interpreter and enforcer of Roman Cahtolic doctrine. Even during the funerals of his late protector, John Paul II, he was not mincing words about his views. He referred to what he called a "dictatorship of relativism" and "new sects" that zap believers through "human trickery." In that capacity, he was willing to start a fight to defend the Roman Catholic doctrine. Whoever is going to replace him will have the same responsibility.

The Conclave of Cardinals chose him as pope. As Benedict XVI, he has chosen to follow in his predecessor's footsteps. He does not want to have the same image of authoritarian doctrinal rottweiller or watchdog. He wants to be seen as a man of peace, reconciliation, a humble servant who will pastor the church. He even wants to reach out to the other faiths he was defending the Church against. Benedict agrees that "Theological dialogue is necessary."

From Nazi youth group to the papacy or from Hitler youth to Holy See, many editorialists have started picking on his past. They also try to bring into the spotlight his former identity. It's true he was the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. That's the same office that used to referred to as the Holy Inquisition. He was charged to protect the church against heresy. He held that position to discipline rogue theologians and bishops, controled the proponents of "liberation theology" such as former Father Jean Bertrand Aristide and countless others all over South and Central Americas. His voice was heard loudly on issues related to homosexuality and feminism. He condemned them.

Benedict XVI brings to the papacy many years of erudition, eloquence and intellectual brilliance. He is aware of the needs of our times, the needs for more integration and diversity in the church. Brazil is a south American country with more Roman Catholic followers. More catholics are found in The Americas and Africa than in Europe. The needs for decentralization will have to be dealt with.

Thanks to his former position, Ratzinger had many opportunities to campaign for the papacy. His views and position were known by many fellow cardinals and followers. Even during the funerals of John Paul II, he used that occasion to make an impression on potential supporters. So, it makes sense that whomever he is going to appoint to that position must have some high doctrinal and moral value. After all, he will have to work with him closely for a long time.

Benedict XVI brings to the papacy many assets which can be used by the Church. He values the importance of education, pluralism of languages. He speaks German, Latin, Italian, English, French and other languages.

Now it's time to stock on the memorabilia of late John Paul II. How about the books and reports written by Cardinal Ratzinger? It's been reported that numerous Ratzinger books have reached the best seller lists of Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com. Titles such as "Salt of the Earth," "
